Val grew up in California were he played club and college soccer at UCLA and San Jose state. Val has been working with youth for over 30 years, working as a Senior Director for the YMCA and running his own youth development non-profit for the last 13 years. His work with youth has given him a unique skill set to work with his players on many different levels. Val’s passion and calling has been to work with youth in his communities and he takes that attitude with every way he coaches.
Val’s coaching career started with a coaching a recreational team out of the YMCA. Taking a team that knew very little about the game and losing every game their first year to winning the city tournament the following year. Val then went on to coach HS soccer, he coached the boys at Cleveland HS, Ballard HS and Roosevelt HS (3rd in state, 2 state tournament appearances, 4 conference playoff appearances) He also coached the girls at Bellevue HS and Ballard HS (4 conference playoff appearances). In 2006 and 2012 he was voted KingCo coach of the year. Val started his club coaching at FC Alliance for 3 years, going undefeated in league play with his first team and taking them to the state semi-finals. He then moved on to coach at Crossfire for 7 years coaching various U11-13 teams.
Val has spent the last 7 years with Northwest Nationals coaching all HS age girls. With the Nationals he has taking his teams to many tournament championships (too many to list) and helping other teams to state tittles. In 2011 his 95 B team won the US club National Championship. Val has also coached at the collegiate level helping Coach Adam Fenster to a NWAACC title with Bellevue College and coaching the keeper who was awarded league MVP. Val was the head coach at Northwest University when he took his team to two conference finals. In his second year at NU he led the team to an undefeated season wining the conference and was successful in getting the team nationally ranked in the top 25. He was also voted conference coach of the year in 2014. Val holds a USSF National “B” license, NSCAA Goalkeeping license and a US Youth Soccer youth license.
Val has been living in Seattle now for almost 20 years and now calls the Northwest home. He is married to his wife Clara and has a son, Dylan, who is on his way to be the best ah… whatever he wants to be. A fun fact is that Val was a Seattle Sounders Golden Scarf Nominee in 2010. In his spare time, Val is an avid woodworker making furniture and anything you can do with wood.
